Come the Morrow

Kongo

More a geographical concept than a fully fledged nation, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC, formerly Zaïre) is a bubbling cauldron of untamed wilderness carpeted by swathes of rainforest and punctuated by gushing rivers and smoking volcanoes. Rendered almost ungovernable by the central administration in Kinshasa, the country remains closed to all but the most brave-hearted travellers. The nation’s history reads like something out of Dante’sInferno – from the brazen political folly of King Leopold of Belgium to the hideously corrupt ‘kleptocracy’ of maverick megalomaniac Mobutu Sese Seko, and the blood-stained battlegrounds of Africa’s first ‘world war’.”

- Lonely Planet

I am excited with anticipation as I prepare for my first journey to the continent of Africa, specifically the DRC. I am boarding a plane Sunday with a group of students from Point Loma Nazarene University. I will be documenting the students experiences as they team up with the local Congolese church to help establish a school in a remote village where the children currently have to walk three miles each way to receive any sort of formal education.

I hope to return with new perspectives and hard drives full of beautiful images and stories. Your thoughts and prayers would be much appreciated.

Peace and Thank You,

Eric
